One morning, Peter woke up, got out of bed as usual, washed his face, and headed to the dining table. A basket of Easter eggs sat on the table. Looking at the eggs, Peter thought to himself that he didn’t understand why people bothered decorating them when they were just going to be broken and eaten anyway, regardless of when such a custom began. He felt a strange sensation while eating the eggs, but dismissing it as the result of a poor night’s sleep, he headed to his post at the guard station. Peter was a member of the Trinsic Guard. His colleague Gustav, who had arrived earlier, spoke to him. “Thomas the blacksmith came by this morning. He said his father is in a strange state and sought out a healer, but they don’t know the cause.” Peter asked, “What do you mean, a strange state?”
Gustav shrugged and said, “He said the laughter won’t stop.” Peter made an absurd face and replied, “What on earth is that supposed to mean?” Gustav said as he packed his gear, “I don’t know either. The Captain of the Guard told us to go check it out. I was waiting for you to arrive.” Peter felt annoyed at the fact that he had to go to the infirmary for such a trivial matter first thing in the morning. Gustav asked, “What is it? What’s so funny?” Peter looked at him and said, “What are you talking about?” “No, I mean, because you’re laughing.”
Peter thought Gustav had seen wrong and said he wasn’t, which made Gustav tilt his head in confusion. Anyway, they headed to the infirmary, and inside was Thomas’s father, who was indeed literally laughing non-stop. While laughter came from his mouth, tears were streaming from his eyes, and his expression was one of agony. Gustav asked the healer, “What exactly is going on here?” The healer shook his head and said, “I’ve never seen anything like this before. At first, I thought he might have eaten laughing mushrooms, but the antidote isn’t working. I have no idea what’s happening.”
Just then, Thomas’s father, who was lying behind the healer, raised a finger and pointed toward Gustav. Thinking he was being called, Gustav stepped closer, but the man continued to make laughing sounds while shaking his head and pointing his finger. When Gustav looked behind him, Peter had a smile across his distorted face. As Gustav stared at him, Peter began to laugh and said, “It’s strange. The laughter won’t stop. Why am I laughing? Hey, something’s wrong with my body.
