Champion spawns are set groups of creatures, spawning in selected locations and normally around an altar. The exception being the Tormented Minotaur spawn in The Labyrinth, which has no altar. The monsters appear in waves of increasing difficulty until finally the Champion him/herself appears and must be defeated.
There are a total of 28 different permanent locations where you might find a Champion Spawn, in addition publish 109, in the summer of 2020, saw the introduction of 26 <a href="https://uo.com/wiki/ultima-online-wiki/combat/champion-spawns/dynamic-champion-spawns/">dynamic locations</a> that may be activated for the duration of a global or EM event. You can find detailed information on the location on these pages:

In Felucca there will always be one location in the Dungeons and one location in the Lost Lands which is active. A dormant altar can be activated by a Knight of Valor, challenge the champion by using the virtue on the altar. The altar can be further challenged once, causing the spawn to advance by one red candle when valor has been worked back up to Knight. All Lost Lands spawns are randomly one of the 5 which appear in Felucca Dungeons, except for the Forest Lord spawn.
In Ilshenar the 4 spawns are always active, the one at Spirituality is always the Forest Lord monster group, the one in Twisted Weald is always the Twualo of the Glade monster group and the two others rotate randomly between the 5 main monster groups.
All other champion spawns are unique to their location.
There are a number of ways to tell if you are in a Champion Spawn area:
<ul>
<li>If you find a strange black altar with a pentagram on top.</li>
<li>If you find a large amount of the same kind of monsters in a relatively small area.</li>
</ul>
<h3><a title="summon" name="summon"></a>Summoning a Champion:</h3>
To summon a Champion you must escalate the spawn by killing as many of the monsters as you can, as fast as you can. Progress is shown on the altar by the number and color of the candles
<div><a href="http://uo.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/altar.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-5200" src="http://uo.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/altar.jpg" alt="altar" width="204" height="223" /></a></div>
White candles show your progress towards the next red candle. Four whites will appear, at the point at which a 5th white would be expected to spawn all 4 whites will disappear and instead a red candle will appear. There are 16 red candles in all, 4 to each side of the altar.
When 8 candles are present traps will appear in the terrain.
The more red candles there are on the altar, the more powerful are the creatures that are spawning.
Once all 16 red are in place there will be one more set of white candles heralding the arrival of the Champion, when all the candles will disappear and the pentagram will turn completely red.
To get more red candles on the altar you need to kill enough monsters within a 10 minute timeframe, the number of monsters depends on the difficulty of the monsters. As you kill monsters, you will see the white candles appear on the shrine. Each of these represents 20% of the necessary monsters having been killed (1 white candle means 20% have been killed, 2 means 40%, etc.).
If you get to 100% of the monsters killed, the spawn level moves forward to the next level, another red candle appears, all the white ones disappear and a new 10 minute timer starts for the next level. If you fail to get 100%, it will either restart the process at the same level, or if you fail miserably, it will move you backward one level and you lose a red candle.
Once the Champion is summoned, it must be killed, so you can be rewarded for your valiant deeds.
<h3><a title="rewards" name="rewards"></a>Rewards for killing a Champion:</h3>
The rewards for killing a Champion are different depending on which facet you are on. The deaths of all champions, with the exception of Meraktus the Tormented Minotaur are accompanied by a shower of gold totaling approximately 200,000 - 275,000gp
<h3>In Ilshenar, Tokuno and Malas</h3>
rewards include <a title="Special Rewards From Champions" href="http://uo.com/wiki/special-rewards-from-champions/">special replica and decorative items</a>
and a special title.
Only the players who have done enough damage to the champion to have looting rights will become eligible for the third tier title. You can see all the different titles <a title="A Guide to Champion Spawns" href="#titles">here</a>.
Players who work the spawn prior to the champion's appearance also have a chance of receiving a <a title="transcendence_scrolls" href="http://uo.com/wiki/ultima-online-wiki/items/scrolls-of-transcendence/">scroll of Transcendence</a>
<h3>In Felucca</h3>
in addition to the replicas, decorative items and third tier hero title eligiblity you also get a chance to get a +10, +15 or +20 <a title="Scrolls of Power" href="http://uo.com/wiki/ultima-online-wiki/items/scrolls-of-power/">Scroll of Power</a> for a random skill.
The Scrolls of Power are awarded upon the Champion's death to random players who are actively involved in the battle against it; damaging the champion, healing fighters etc.
A maximum of 12 scrolls is given out from each champion, 6 from damaging the champion and another 6 from protecting players using the Justice virtue.
A lesser form of Scroll of Power, a +5 scroll, and scrolls of transcendence are also awarded to players for just killing the normal monsters in the spawn. Any monster in the spawn has a small random chance to give one of these lesser scrolls. There is a 50/50 chance of its being either +5 or transcendence. If a protected player receives such a scroll his protector will also receive a scroll of the same type, +5 or transcendence.
The scrolls will appear in the backpack of the players who are awarded them.
Scrolls of Power are all "cursed", which means that they, unlike most other items, will stay behind on your dead body to be looted if you should happen to die, it is also possible for thieves to steal them.
In Felucca a special item will also appear in the pack of the player who did the most damage to the champion, a so called Champion Skull. The exact name of this skull is different depending on the Champion it was taken from.
A complete set of these skulls can be used to summon the "Super Champion", The Harrower.
<h3><a title="harrower" name="harrower"></a>The Harrower:</h3>
Once a Champion is killed in Felucca a dark moongate will appear. This moongate will take you to a room, know as the Star Room, in Terathan Keep.
In the Star Room you can find six altars, one for each Champion. On these altars you can place the skull of the Champion you killed.
<h3>The Champion Skulls</h3>
<ul>
<li><strong>The Piper</strong> - Skull of Greed (blue)</li>
<li><b>Rikktor</b> - Skull of Power (orange)</li>
<li><b>Mephitis</b> - Skull of Venom (green)</li>
<li><b>Semidar</b> - Skull of Pain (yellow)</li>
<li><b>Neira</b> - Skull of Death (red)</li>
<li><b>Lord Oaks</b> - Skull of Enlightenment (white)</li>
</ul>
Once all six skulls are in place, The Harrower will spawn in a random Felucca dungeon and a dark moongate leading to the entrance of that dungeon will appear on the altar.
The Harrower will be quite hard to kill. In fact you have to kill it twice, because when you first kill it, then the True Harrower will spawn along with a lot of Tentacles of the Harrower.
When the True Harrower finally dies, <a title="Scrolls of Power" href="http://uo.com/wiki/ultima-online-wiki/items/scrolls-of-power/">Scrolls of Power</a> are randomly awarded to players who have earned looting rights. These scrolls allow a player to increase his stat cap.
Those who did enough damage to the Harrower will also be awarded with a new kind of hero title, believed to be related to how many Champions you have assisted in killing.
<h3><a title="groups" name="groups"></a>The Monster Groups:</h3>
There are thirteen different monster groups, each with their own Champion.
For each group there are certain monsters that spawns at certain levels of the spawn. When the spawn progresses to a higher level some of the lesser spawn might stay around too, including when the Champion spawns.
The number of candles representing each level might vary slightly from spawn to spawn (+/- 1 candle), but the numbers shown here should give a general idea of how the levels look.

The thirteenth champion, Meraktus the Tormented Minotaur has no altar, no tiers of monsters, no title awarded and no gold drop.
<h3><a title="titles" name="titles"></a>The Hero Titles:</h3>
The hero titles are awarded for killing the monsters that spawns in the Champion spawns. The first two tiers of titles are attainable by simply killing the normal monsters, but the third tier can only be attained if you are eligible for it. You become eligible for the third tier by killing the Champion.
If you have killed enough monsters in two different groups you are eligible for two titles, selectable from your <a href="http://uo.com/wiki/ultima-online-wiki/player/skill-titles-order/">titles menu</a>. killing other groups will not lower your current title.
Titles decay at a constant speed even if you are not logged in. killing harder creatures will let you keep your title longer.
Nine of the monster groups each have their own set of titles.

Killing the Harrower will result in a different set of titles, which work in a different way. The title shows how many of the different "normal" champions you have killed, the first tier is for only killing the Harrower and the seventh tier is for killing the Harrower and all the other champions.
